The method

What Feldenkrais is

The Feldenkrais Method, named for its founder Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, uses slow, gentle movement to improve human function. It deepens your sense of how your body moves, and offers strategies to make movement simpler and more fluid.

Joanne completed her Feldenkrais certification in 2005, and it shapes how she teaches every Strong Bones class. Awareness Through Movement lessons are done lying down or seated, at your own pace, with no strain.

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

A form of movement education that uses slow, gentle movement to improve how you function. Rather than stretching or forcing anything, it teaches your nervous system easier, more efficient ways to move.

How is it taught?

Two ways: Awareness Through Movement, taught verbally to a group, and Functional Integration, done one-to-one. Both are built to draw on the nervous system's ability to learn, adapt and change — the neuroplasticity documented across a wide body of research, which is why nobody is too old to learn and change.

Can anyone do these lessons?

Yes. The biggest difference between Feldenkrais and other body-oriented methods is the ease with which every movement is carried out — ease is a fundamental principle of the learning.

What happens in a lesson?

Joanne guides you verbally through deceptively simple movement sequences, usually lying on a mat, sometimes seated or standing. You are asked to notice parts of your body involved in a movement that normally escape your attention. The results surprise people; the attention it asks for is unlike anything else.

What the lessons feel like

“After participating in Joanne's Awareness Through Movement classes, my movements feel more fluid. I become very relaxed and more flexible. It's a wonderfully unique feeling of being physically 'free' and very connected to my body.”
Ann R., PhD
“In the most gentle, soothing and inclusive way… to feel the result of lengthened limbs and opened joints is nothing short of miraculous, and something I have not experienced anywhere else. My wife says I look like a different person when I come home from class, and I feel like one too.”
Will B.
