Every class opens the same way: “Welcome to Strong Bones class.” Then Joanne takes you through an exercise, explaining the cues as she goes.

Before you worry about it

The things people ask before their first class

Every one of these comes up. None of them is a reason you can't start.

  • “Am I too old or too frail for this?”

The class was built for people with osteopenia and osteoporosis, most of them over 60. There is no fitness level to reach first.

  • “What if I can't do a movement?”

Joanne offers a modification for every exercise as she teaches it. Skipping something is normal, not failing.

  • “Could I hurt myself?”

A physical therapist is choosing every movement. Exercises known to raise spinal fracture risk are deliberately left out — and she says why.

  • “Is this a real therapy program?”

Joanne has been a licensed physical therapist since 1978, is BoneFit™ trained, and teaches the program she built after her own osteoporosis diagnosis.

  • “Will everyone see me on camera?”

Your camera is yours to control. Plenty of people keep it off, and nobody is put on the spot.

  • “What if I miss a class?”

Every class is recorded and posted the same day. You can do it the next morning, or repeat one you liked.

What we cover

Six things every class works on

Strength

Back and core strengthening with progressive resistance — the loading that bone actually responds to.

Balance

The first ~20 minutes are standing balance work, directly targeting fall prevention.

Posture

Postural education that protects the spine during everyday movement, not just during class.

Flexibility

Safe stretches that keep you moving well without putting the spine at risk.

Body Awareness

Feldenkrais-informed attention to how you move, so good mechanics become automatic.

Evidence-Based

Every exercise has a reason behind it, drawn from current research — and Joanne explains it.

Inside the hour

What it actually looks like

  • Students standing in a circle working with stretching straps while Joanne watches
Standing work opens the class — hold onto a sturdy object whenever you need to.
  • Students on mats lifting their hips while Joanne teaches beside an anatomical skeleton
Floor strength work, with the anatomy explained as you go.
  • A student lying comfortably on a mat with her head supported, one leg raised
No strain, no forcing — this is not a bootcamp.

Equipment

What you'll need at home

Nothing exotic, and substitutions are fine. Classes that use bands or rollers are flagged in advance.

An exercise mat on a living room floor with ankle weights, light dumbbells, a stretching strap, a resistance band and a foam roller, beside a sturdy wooden chair
  • Handheld dumbbells

    Needed

Used in most classes. Start light — around 2 lb — and progress gradually.

  • Non-elastic stretching strap

    Needed

    Used every other week.

  • Resistance bands

    Needed

Used roughly every third class; the dates are listed with each class.

  • Ankle weights

    Recommended

    Strongly recommended when you’re ready.

  • Foam roller

    Optional

36" long, up to 6" diameter. Optional — Joanne explains how to modify the exercises if you don’t have one.

From students

What people say

“After less than a year of classes, my DXA testing showed my spine bone density improved 3.6% and my hip 4.4%. The improved core and upper body strength keeps my back pain at bay.”
